Refurb Hack - IKEA Malm

Have you ever had a piece of furniture that’s been so good to you that you can not let it go!?

Me too!! I’ve chucked so many good pieces of furniture, not realizing all it needed was a “Lil” sprucing up! So...Four Scores and seven years ago, literally seven years ago, my husband and I bought the Ikea Malm dresser.

For me, buying from Ikea is like an adrenaline rush until I see how many boxes I need for that one item! That confused little man on the instructions, and I have never gotten along (Killer Eye Roll).

Nevertheless, on YouTube and Pinterest, I see these adorable Ikea Malm hacks (refurbishing) and decided to give it a go. Since the dresser sits a little low and is a bit too dark for our space, I ordered some 6-inch dresser feet and brightened it up a bit with a lovely clean white.

Upon dismantling the dresser, I noticed it lacked a base needed to add height to the dresser.

It also lacks handles! I initially thought to add leather pulls, but to keep this project under $100, I found some gorgeous sleek 15” handles that would fit perfectly.

Supplies:

Dresser

  • Paint - Lowe’s - Rustoleum Furniture Paint

  • Cabinet Foam Rollers

  • Cabinet Handles 15” - Amazon

Base

  • Quarter Round 8’ (1 ea)

  • 2 x 4 x 6 (2 ea)

  • Dresser Legs

  • Pocket Screws & Pocket Screw Jig

  • Brad Nailer (16 Gauge)

  • Miter Saw

Tips for the Process:

Keep in mind that if you do not have the tools, please don't go out and buy them. If you chose to add a wooden base, Home Depot and Lowes will cut it for you, and a simple hammer and nail will work just fine.
